Girlfriends

Back in Barbados I have a core group of about 8 girlfriends who’ve known each other forever – literally! Some of these girls I’ve been friends with for 33 years, and I’m 35 – F.O.R.E.V.E.R!

When I moved to Canada, one of my fears was that I would not be able to have that. As much as I love my husand and my kids – a woman needs her girlfriends! 4 years later – those fears have been alleviated… I have good girlfriends here:)

Is it the same? No – it could never be. I grew up with my friends in Barbados, there is an intimacy that comes with that that I could never re-create here. I can and have told those girls anything and everything.

On the other hand, they know everything about me – the good and the bad. I became the person I am now – in front of them. I am quite happy with the person I am now – but a lot of stuff (that I’d rather not talk about) brought me to this point.

With my friends here, they just get to know me without knowing the parts of my past that horrify me. There is a sense of relief that comes with that. And who knows, maybe 20 years from now – I will have built the same intimacy with my friends here.

All of this because – I went out with a couple girlfriends last night, and I had a blast. We didn’t do much of anything, just a casual evening out for a bite to eat. But it sure fills my soul up in a way I can’t quite describe.

My girlfriends and I in Barbados about a hundred years ago!

There is no substitute for girlfriends.
