Laptop Cake

My husband’s birthday was on August 21st. Last week the boys and I were getting ready to go shopping for his present together when my 3 yr old, Ethan, says to me “Mom are you going to make Dad a train cake?” (Because that is the cake Ethan got for his 3rd birthday) I chuckle and say “No hun, Dad is not getting a train cake.” Ethan furrows his brow, leans into me and whispers “What about a computer cake?” – which shows how well he knows his father! And so the laptop cake idea was born!

Once the decision was made to make the laptop cake – I had to figure out how I was going to do it. I had some ideas, and I took to the internet to see what I could find. In my research it seemed that most people did not make the screen of the laptop edible – but I really wanted that to be cake as well. So I came up with my plan – now it was time to execute it.

I started on the accessories a few days before I made the cakes. For the keyboard – I rolled out white fondant and cut the keys out to match my laptop. I then wrote all of the letters and numbers on them using an edible ink pen I bought from Michael’s Craft Store. I also made the iPod ahead of time. To do that, I dyed some of the fondant gray and some of it black, and got out my real iPod and just copied it.

I decided to bake the cakes the day before I put the cake together, so that I could freeze the cakes to get them ready to cut. I had 3 cakes to make… 1 for the desk, 1 for the base of the laptop and one for the screen. Putting the cake together took some time, especially since it was my first time working with Fondant, but I am pretty pleases with how it turned out. More importantly, Alex was too:) Happy Birthday Baby!
