Ethan’s 3rd Birthday Cake
Ethan turned 3 a few weeks ago – and this birthday was all about trains! He got a lovely Train table from Gramma & Papa, so we thought a Train cake was definitely the way to go! I had a blast making this cake! Here is how it got put together… First I covered a piece of wood with Aluminum foil, then I smeared icing all over it. Next I stuck chocolate covered wafers into the icing in the shape I wanted the track to take. Once I had done that, I sprinkled cookie crumbs right around the track, to look like gravel. I then covered the rest of the board with grated coconut that I had dyed green with food coloring, to look like grass. Once that was done, I placed licorice laces along the top of the Tracks to look like the rails. I secured the licorice to the tracks with a little chocolate icing. As for the cake itself:- I made a few cakes in loaf pans and stuck them in the freezer. I also used a tomato paste can to bake the circular part of the main engine. Once the cakes were frozen I cut out the rectangles for the cars of the train. I then iced them and placed them on the tracks – using mini Oreo cookies for the train wheels. Then my boys had fun loading the train up with yummy cargo! The cake was a big hit, but I would be lying if I didn’t say that it broke my heart a little bit when the kids actually wanted to eat it!
